Dennis E. Bolen gave Kate Braid’s memoir Journeywoman a rave review in the Vancouver Sun this weekend. Calling the book “comparable to the best of literary autobiographies,” Bolen writes,

The author’s poetic background is a major plus here as she wields an eloquent concision, useful in crafting a candid memoir that is as much technical descriptive as it is an account of human maturation…

Throughout, one gets a real sense of the moment-to-moment peril of carpentry; how any one of a dozen different disasters can arise by the slightest inattention or misjudgment. All this amid a grassroots discussion of the nature of male-female relationships, seen through the reluctant eyes of one who does not seek to change the world, but simply to become a tradesperson. It is a saga of bold venture, spiritual search and redemption through sheer personal courage.
